The authors, John Roberts, Max Baker, and Jane Andrew wrote in their article “Artificial intelligence and qualitative research: The promise and perils of large language model (LLM) “assistance” published in the Critical Perspectives on Accounting on February 22, 2024 that LLMs are far from human-like and have empty echoes.
The authors above wrote that research suggests this sycophantic behavior becomes more pronounced as LLMs become more powerful and fine-tuned to follow specific instructions. Even when presented with factual information contradicting a user’s incorrect belief, LLMs may still agree with the user’s perspective.
